In areas at risk from wildfires, California law requires landowners implement and maintain a Defensible Space landscape area between buildings and potential approaching wildfires. In addition, new buildings must be protected by a Fuel Modification Zone.
All new homes and structures, subdivisions, and buildings undergoing substantial remodel, within the Wildland-Urban Interface, are required to provide a Vegetation Fuels Managment Plan (VMP) addressing both Defensible Space and a Fuel Modification Zone.
