Fairfax Receives Federal Wildfire Hazard Grant

The Town of Fairfax and Ross Valley Fire Department are embarking on a major project to reduce wildfire risk.  We obtained a federal grant from the US Forest Service to help create roadside clearance and to provide community “Chipper Days” to assist homeowners in targeted neighborhoods dispose of hazardous vegetation around their homes.

If you have any questions about the grant and associated fuel removal activities, please call and leave a message at 456-5652.

Roadway Vegetation Removal Project to Commence Summer 2010

Roadway clearance is essential to allow emergency vehicles to quickly and safely access the scene of a fire, while at the same time allowing residents to escape.  Federal funds from a National Fire Plan Grant, awarded to the Town of Fairfax, will be used to remove vegetation that overhangs the roadway and along roadsides in neighborhoods targeted for their relative wildfire hazard.  Licensed Contractors and Certified Arborists will complete the ongoing work over the next 18 months.  Residents with questions regarding the roadway clearance project may leave a message at 456-5652.  Calls will be returned promptly.

Grant Funds Available to Help Organize Neighborhood Chipper Days!

In addition to roadway clearance projects, some of the National Fire Plan Grant Funds may be used to facilitate neighborhood “Chipper Day” projects to improve wildfire safety.  We need residents to help organize neighborhood “Chipper Days.”  These events are a great way to help bring residents together in support of emergency preparedness by reducing overgrown vegetation, improving access for fire engines, and improving road clearance for escape routes.  By chipping cut vegetation in place, the time and cost of disposal is greatly reduced, while the chips provide a fire resistant mulch.  For more information on organizing a “Chipper Day,” call Maria Baird at (415) 456-5652.
